The department addresses problems related to respiratory, cardiac, neurological, endocrine, diabetic complications, perioperative assessment and management of underlying conditions The learning climate emphasizes patient-centered care and inter-professional collaboration. Residents learn to manage diverse medical issues across the spectrum of inpatient, intensive care and ambulatory settings. Program components include modified block scheduling that allows for relative separation of inpatient and outpatient responsibilities and a comprehensive didactic curriculum delivered in a protected academic half day format. Substantial opportunities for research are available. Internal medicine residency starts in the PGY1 year and is three years in total. Many internal medicine residents, however, do further subspecialty training. The top internal medicine programs are very competitive so it is important to understand what your target programs will be. The vast majority of U.S. allopathic seniors match in internal.
